Cross Border Environmental Partnership

Coordinated Catchment Action for Healthier Rivers & Stronger Ecosystems

CALM is a cross border partnership working to improve river health and strengthen ecological resilience across shared catchments. By aligning regional authorities, environmental agencies and research institutions, the project delivers coordinated, evidence led action that supports long term environmental improvement. A key focus of the programme is reducing nutrient and sediment loads that impact water quality across shared river catchments.

River Restoration

Restoring natural river structure and improving ecological health across priority catchments.

Water Quality Monitoring

Scientific tracking of water quality to understand changes and guide effective action.

Nature Based Solutions

Using natural processes such as wetlands and vegetation to improve water and habitat quality.

Community Engagement

Working with local communities, landowners, and stakeholders to support long term river protection.

Pilot Project

Ballymartrim Tributary Innovation Pilot

The CALM project is delivering an innovation pilot on the Ballymartrim tributary to address multiple sources of river pollution. The pilot brings together scientific monitoring, habitat restoration, and nutrient management strategies to improve water quality and strengthen ecosystem resilience within the catchment.

Upcoming Events & Workshops

CALM’s events and workshops bring together communities, partners and specialists to share knowledge, showcase practical action and encourage local involvement across our catchments. From river restoration days and citizen science training to guided site visits and each event supports informed engagement and collaborative environmental improvement.

More events are on the way. Check back soon for upcoming CALM events and activities.

Water Quality Monitoring

Monthly updates from Ulster University provide evidence-based insight into the ecological condition of monitored catchments. Each update includes a narrative summary and supporting charts, with previous reports archived automatically to ensure consistent, transparent reporting over the life of the programme.
